22-yr-old confined in room for 20 yrs
Aug 8, 2014-
A woman has been found to be confined to a room outside her own house for the past two decades. Parwati Nepali, 22, of Barpauwa-5 in Bharatpokhari has been confined to the room by her own parents and family members who say they had no option other than locking her up inside the squalid makeshift room made of wood beside the cowshed. They said they confined her as she is unable to speak, eat food or drink on her own, cannot control her bowls and she runs amok whenever she is allowed to go out of her house.
The family members said she has been confined in the room since she was two years old for her safety and also to avoid further embarrassment to the family. She is brought inside the house only during the night and tied to a pole.
Parwati’s parents said they took her to many hospitals for treatment, but to no avail. “The doctors who treated her could not diagnose her disorder,” Parwati’s father Purna Bahadur said. “We spent a lot of money on her treatment but she never got better.”
He said that there will be no one to look after if the family members let her go outside. “So we have no option but to lock her up so others can work rather than following her wherever she wanders,” Purna Bahadur said, adding that things are still complicated as she can neither eat food nor attend to nature’s call on her own.
Mental health expert Dr Lumeshwor Acharya said that it appears that Parwati is afflicted with mental illness. “But we should not lock her up, never,” he said, adding, “She can indeed be better if she undergoes proper medical treatment and has the support of her family.”
