Dr Gurung appointed NAMS VC

- POST REPORT, Kathmandu

Aug 8, 2014-

Prime Minister Sushil Koirala appointed Dr Ganesh Gurung the vice-chancellor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (Nams) on Friday. Dr Gurung is an orthopaedics surgeon at the Bir Hospital.

The position of vice-chancellor at the Nams was lying vacant for the past four months. The government had formed a three-member panel led by Health Minister Khagraj Adhikari to recommend the eligible individual to fill the vacancy.

Several other seats of office bearers at the Nams are still vacant. Demanding that the government fill these positions and provide basic medical equipments such as MRI, CT-scan and X-ray at the hospital, around 300 resident doctors affiliated to the Nams are on strike since July 27. The agitating doctors have also halted the emergency service at the hospital to press the government into fulfilling their demand for reforms at the country’s oldest medical institution.

The doctors’ strike has severely affected the services at the hospital, forcing the patients to visit elesewhere to seek medical attention.
