BRB faction’s parallel panel in Kathmandu

- POST REPORT, Kathmandu

Aug 20, 2014-

UCPN (Maoist) leaders close to Baburam Bhattarai have formed a parallel district committee in Kathmandu. A press conference was organised at the Alfa Beta Complex in New Baneshwor in the Capital on Wednesday to inform about the formation of the panel.

Bhattarai-led faction of the party formed a 57-member district committee under the chairmanship of Mahendra Shrestha. Claiming that their committee was the legitimate one, Bhattarai faction said leader Himal Sharma, chairman of the earlier district committee, was appointed as the vice-chairman of the new committee.

Speaking at the press meet, chairman Shrestha informed that the ideological issues raised during party’s Biratnagar Convention would be taken for further deliberations in the district committee. He was the party’s candidate from Kathmandu Constituency-5 in last year’s Constituent Assembly election. Leaders close to Bhattarai had, in the past, formed parallel committees in Dhanusha, Kaski and other districts.

The party’s Standing Committee (SC) meeting on August 4 had taken action against leaders Ganga Shrestha and Ram Rijhan Yadav for their role in forming parallel district committees. Shrestha was suspended from the SC for three months while Yadav was suspended for a month. Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal faction, however, has expressed dissatisfaction over the formation of the parallel panel saying that efforts are under way at the party’s top level to resolve the differences.

Bhattarai faction has demanded that a general convention organising committee be formed dissolving the current Central Committee. Dahal, however, is said to be against the demand.

Dahal on Tuesday said disagreement with Bhattarai will be resolved soon.
