Dozen sinkholes appear in Pokhara settlements

Aug 29, 2014-

Around a dozen sinkholes have appeared at Baidam and Lakeside in Pokhara following incessant rainfall for the past four days. A two storey building at Jorawar has developed cracks after two sinkholes appeared nearby. The house owner, Basanta Neupane, said his family cannot leave the house as they have no alternative.

Engineer Sharada Mohan Kafle at the Pokhara sub-metropolis said the change in the weather pattern, rapidly developing settlement and the lack of proper outlet for underground water may have caused the sinkholes.

Meanwhile, Geologist Krishna KC said though they conducted a survey of the sinkhole-prone areas in 1998 and submitted a report to the concerned authorities, no one bothered to go through it.

“If local residents and authorities concerned do not take preventive measures immediately, we will be heading towards a huge disaster,” he said, urging all the concerned to come up with a plan to address the situation in order to avoid damage to life and property.

According to the report, the areas between Bharabhari and Sardikhola in Pokhara to Bhimad in Tanahun are identified as the most sensitive places to sinkholes.
