PM Koirala reaches Belgium on three-day Europe visit

Prime Minister Sushil Koirala reached the Belgian capital Brussels on Monday on a three-day visit of European countries. Koirala is on his way back after completing his engagements in the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In Brussels, the PM was briefed by Nepali ambassadors in Europe and Israel. They presented to him the status of bilateral relations with the countries they represent. Ambassadors and charge d’ affaires at Nepali missions in EU, Germany, United Kingdom, Denmark, Switzerland, Russia and Israel were present.

According to a statement issued by PM’s private secretariat, Koirala met European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and discuss Nepal-EU relations and EU’s assistance to Nepal. He will meet Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, and Prime Minister of Luxemburg Xavier Bettel.

EU is a major donor of Nepal, cooperating in various projects and assisting Nepal in the conflict aftermath, said Khaganath Adhikari, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In March, in the line with its Agenda for Change, the EU decided to triple its aid to Nepal. Aligned with the objectives of Nepal’s next three-year development plan, the EU has decided to contribute 360 million euros for the 2014-2020 period in sustainable rural development, education, democracy and decentralisation.
