MPs slam govt for poor disaster mgmt
Oct 14, 2014-
Lawmakers have criticised the government for its poor post-disaster management, failing in providing flood and landslide victims with adequate relief and rehabilitation packages.
Addressing the zero hour of Parliament on Tuesday, lawmakers representing the disaster-affected districts and other parts of the country said, thousands of victims are forced to live under ‘poor living conditions’ due to lack of adequate and proper response efforts from the government more than a month since floods in Mid-Western districts and massive landslide in Sindupalchok district.
The victims even lack basic facilities like food supply and proper shelters. The lawmakers also proposed for setting up a parliamentary committee to suggest the government in ensuring proper disaster management during the pre- and post-disaster events in the country, particularly during the monsoon period. Flash floods and landslides, triggered by the monsoon, killed more than 200 people leaving thousands displaced in various places in the country.
Property and infrastructure worth millions were destroyed in floods in Dang, Surkhet, Bardiya and Banke in the Mid-western region and massive landslide in Sindupalchok.
