3 killed, 4 dozen missing in bus plunge

At least three people were killed and eleven others injured when a passenger bus plunged into the Bheri river at Bhur-8 along the Chhinchu-Jajarkot road in the district on Thursday morning. Some four dozen passengers are also missing, police said.

The ill-fated bus (Na 3 Kha 1408) heading towards Rakam of Surkhet from Jajarkot district headquarters carrying around 60 passengers fell some 80 metres down the highway while trying to give way to an oncoming vehicle. Two of the deceased have been identified as Gita Sunar of Khalanga and Ayush Malla, son of Ujjwal Malla, who is among those missing in the accident. The identity of another deceased child is yet to be ascertained, police said. Bus driver Laxman Chaudhary has gone missing while driver’s aide Motiram Argi and conductor Dipendra GC were rescued alive, police said.

Among the injured, Bimala Rokaya, Padamraj Puri, Bhim Bahadur Chand and GC have been referred to Nepalgunj for further treatment and other injured have been sent to Surkhet, DSP Dineshraj Mainali said, adding that separate teams of the Nepal Army and Nepal Police were searching for the missing.

The kin of the victims have accused authorities of causing delays in the rescue efforts. An NA helicopter also reached the site of incident to join the rescue operations.
