BRB bids to win over Dahal loyals
- ucpn (maoist) cc meet
Dec 28, 2014-
Senior UCPN (Maoist) leader Baburam Bhattarai said on Sunday that he is willing to become chairman to revive the party as a new vibrant political force of the country.
Speaking at party’s Central Committee meeting on Sunday, Bhattarai said this is the first time that he is prepared to take the leadership though he has worked with party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal for long.
Ruling out suggestions that he wanted to form a new party, the Maoist ideologue assured the party colleagues that he wanted to establish the same party as a new political force.
Last year, Bhattarai brought the concept of new political force in the country to salvage the Maoist movement, stirring debates inside and outside the party.
Bhattarai, who is believed to have a relatively weak organisational structure in the party, is trying to convince leaders of the Dahal faction to accept his leadership. As Dahal has been leading the party for the last 25 years, it has also overburdened him, said Bhattarai.
Establishing the party as a new political force has been Bhattarai’s “standard statement” since Dahal assured him of the party leadership, according to Maoist leaders. “Baburamji has been saying all along that he wants to be tested as the party head and to be presented in a new way inside the party,” said Haribol Gajurel, Maoist leader close to Dahal.
At the party CC meet two weeks ago, Dahal said he would relinquish his position and hand over the leadership to Bhattarai, drawing criticism from Dahal loyal. Bhattarai maintains that Dahal should be given a respectable position in the party. “A new methodology should be developed to give appropriate space for Dahal after the leadership handover,” Bhattarai said.
Vice-Chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha, however, objected to the understanding between Dahal and Bhattarai. Insisting on correcting the party’s working style, he said the proposed general convention should discuss about the party ideology instead of the leadership handover.
He criticised the leadership for abandoning party’s revolutionary ideals and proletariat image. “The leadership handover dispute will overshadow the ideological debate in the party,” Shrestha said. The CC meeting is expected to fix the date for the next general convention. The party is likely to dissolve current party’s office bearer, standing committee and politburo.
