Karnali embankment work begins

The Karnali River Control Project has initiated constructing an embankment in the Karnali and Geruwa rivers awarding a two-year tender to a private builder.

According to the project officials, the Rs 22 billion embankment is scheduled be completed within five years.

Project chief Aatmaram Raya said they aim to construct a seven-kilometre section of the embankment from Banghusra in Patabhar VDC to Tihuni in Rajapur within this fiscal year. He said expenditure for the project this year is expected to be around Rs 500 million. As part of this year’s work, embankment construction at Manau and Saipur in Tikapur-2 have also been started.

Officials said they also intend to construct a five-metre road along the five metre high embankment that is expected to control the rivers.

The project office at Rajapur was inaugurated by Irrigation Minister Narayan Prasad Saud on Friday. Currently, the office has 19 staffers overseeing the construction work.
