Officials to finish repair by mid-June

Apr 15, 2015-

The 1.4 kilometre Lokanthali-Sano Thimi road in the district, which has been dilapidated for years, will be pitched by mid-June, road authorities said.

Talking to the Post on Wednesday, Bhaktapur Division Road Office (BDRO) chief Devendra Prasad Sah said more than 80 percent of the road has already been gravelled. “After completing gravelling on the remaining section, asphalt will be laid on top,” he added.

Currently, the road is close-to-impossible to commute through as it is uneven and has potholes all over. Vehicles often get stuck and pedestrians repeatedly slip over trying to walk through the mud. “Walking to and from college turns into a balancing act,” said Susan Thapa, who lives along the road some ten minutes from Lokanthali Chowk. “I have missed college on more than one occasion by tripping over on the road and spoiling my uniform.” Thapa is not the only one. People living in the area who were interviewed by the Post admitted to have fallen while treading the road or seen someone else go down. “Last year, a pillion rider broke her leg after the motorcycle she was riding on skidded some ten metres,” a shopkeeper near Lokanthali Sub-health Post said.

According to locals, the road has been in ruins for more than four years. The BDRO, however, started repairs only last year.

“Reconstruction started late as we were waiting for the road expansion to finish first,” said Dev Bikram Khadka, an engineer with the BDRO. The road, which was 4 to 5 metres wide, has now been expanded to 6 to 8 metres. Still, the section between Lokanthali Chowk and the Sub-health Post is yet to be expanded.

Meanwhile, the condition of streets linking to the Lokanthali-Sano Thimi road is no different. Works on building sewerage system are under way with large sections dug open. Engineer Khadka said the latter is the public’s own initiative and is not part of their project.
