Heatwave cripples life in Tarai
May 30, 2015-
Relentless heatwave has affected life in Mid and Far Western regions of Tarai for the past one week.
Sweltering weather has become responsible for the rise in number of patients suffering from gastroenteritis, vomiting, and liver-related complications. Hospitals in Banke, Bardiya, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Dang and Doti districts are crowded.
“The number of patients doubled within matter of days and it is increasing. There has been no let up,” said Dr Sanket Risal of Bheri Zonal Hospital in Nepalgunj. Meanwhile, schools in some of the districts have been closed for two weeks due to the heat wave.
In Kanchanpur, public movement during the day has decreased as people remain indoors or under shade to beat the heat.
Market places look deserted and the daily wage workers, rickshaw pullers and porters have been hit hard.
The western Tarai belt is vulnerable to hot and dry summer wind condition each year in summer due to the influence of the scorching temperatures in Rajasthan and north-west regions of India.
