Quake-hit to get ‘model houses’
Jun 3, 2015-
Responding to various proposals tabled by the NGOs eager to work in the areas devastated by the quake, the District Disaster Relief Committee (DDRC) has
started issuing permission to the NGOs under the condition that they build temporary shelters and structures for the schools and victims in the VDCs in order to facilitate the reconstruction process.
According to Chief District Officer Prem Lal Lamichhane, the DDRC has tasked three NGOs for reconstruction works in six VDCs.
These organisations will be constructing temporary housing for the locals rendered homeless by the earthquake, including temporary structures for schools, health posts and community buildings.
Lamichhane said that the NGOs have been given the permission to build approximately 7,500 temporary housing structures for people in the worst quake-hit VDCs in the district. An estimated 55,000 people are in need of temporary houses in the district immediately.
Chandi Prasad Shrestha, programme coordinator of Educate the Children, Nepal said that they intend to build ‘model houses’ for approximately 1,087 households in Babare VDC. The structures will be 12 feet in both length and breadth and would stand eight feet tall, informed Shrestha.
The organisation stated that the structures made out of metal and corrugated zinc sheets will be “strong and comfortable”.
Similarly, it also intends to distribute zinc sheets in Lamidanda and Lapilang VDCs. Lamichhane informed that the DDRC had requested the organisation to build temporary houses for 1,384 and 1,442 households in Lamidanda and Lapilang VDC’s respectively.
The DDRC has also granted permission to build shelters for the quake-hit at Mali and Thulopatal of Jiri Municipality and Shyama VDC to another NGO called Samaritan’s Purse. The organisation will be constructing shelters for 961 households in Mali, 962 in Thulopatal and 779 households in Shyama VDC.
