Indian PM Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Oli and congratulated him on his election. Modi also invited Oli to visit India.
Modi was the first head of government to talk to the prime minister-elect. Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Wu Chuntai paid a courtesy call on Oli at the CPN-UML party office and congratulated him. On behalf of the Chinese government and people, “I congratulate you on your election to the post of prime minister,” the Chinese ambassador said.
According to the Indian Embassy, Modi termed Oli’s election as “democratic and orderly” and conveyed his congratulations to him. The Indian PM also looked forward to working closely with Oli. Thanking Modi for his words, Oli is learnt to have conveyed to his Indian counterpart that Nepal is reeling under a crisis of essential goods due to the border obstruction. He urged Oli to ease supplies at the earliest.
According to UML lawmaker Rajan Bhattarai, the Indian PM assured that such difficulties would be resolved soon. He also sought the requirements in writing from the Nepali side. “The prime minister expressed his hope that Oli will carry all sections of society along, so that there is peace and stability in the country. We are confident that the government of Nepal will address the remaining political issues in a spirit of dialogue and reconciliation,” read the statement.
Modi conveyed that India has always stood for peace, prosperity and progress of Nepal, which is also in India’s interest. India would continue its assistance in accordance with people’s aspirations for peace, stability and socio-economic development.
