Parties fail to pick candidates based on consensus

The Article 299 (2) of the constitution has a provision for the selection of
speaker and deputy speaker on consensus within 20 days of the resumption of Parliament.
After the resignation of Speaker Subas Nembang and Deputy-Speaker Onsari Gharti the Parliament had commissioned the parties to file the nomination of consensus candidates by 3 pm Thursday.
With the failure of the parties to come up with the consensus candidates, both posts will now be determined through majority process on Friday, as envisioned by the Article 299 (3) of the constitution.
The Parliament Secretariat has called for registering the candidacy for both positions between 11:30 am 2 pm on Friday.
The final list of the contenders will be published at 2:30 pm. The election of speaker will be held at 3 pm while the voting for deputy speaker will take place at 5 pm.
So far, as a candidate from ruling alliance UCPN (Maoist) has decided to field Gharti for the post of speaker while Bikram Bahadur Thapa from Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal is likely to contest for deputy speaker’s role.
If elected, Gharti will be the first female speaker.
