Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa got no clear indication from India about lifting its “unofficial blockade” immediately.
Thapa, who arrived in New Delhi on Saturday on a three-day visit, met with India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday. Sources said Thapa tried his best to win India’s goodwill assuring that Nepal would solve its internal political problem—the ongoing protests in the Tarai.
“The meetings with Indian ministers Swaraj and Singh have been positive. I am confident that initiatives will be taken to resolve our mutual problems,” Minister Thapa told the Post. He had met Swaraj at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. “I will give details after further meetings at other levels tomorrow [Monday],” Thapa added.
DPM Thapa later met with India’s national security adviser Ajit Doval. He is expected to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 11am before returning to Kathmandu on Monday.
A Nepali official who attended the meeting that lasted for about an hour said the Nepali side briefed the Indian officials on the ongoing tension at Nepal-India border and obstruction in the movement of vehicles carrying daily essentials. Thapa briefed Swaraj on the government change in Nepal and the constitution amendment process.
According to the source, Swaraj expressed India’s concerns over the agitation on the Nepal side of the border and urged her Nepali counterpart to take initiatives to resolve “internal problems through dialogue and understanding”.
Home Minister Singh was concerned about constitution amendment and the demarcation of federal states.
Though the Nepali delegation is in Delhi to take up the issue of obstruction of supplies at major border points, discussions between the two sides revolved around political issues. Accompanied by Foreign Secretary Shanker Das Bairagi and senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies, DPM Thapa had left for Delhi on Saturday. This is the first high-level visit to India from Nepal after the promulgation of the new constitution.
Meanwhile, Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and Nepal desk chief Abhay Thakur met Thapa at Hotel Oberoi.
