Prime Minister KP Oli’s unilateral decision to expand the Cabinet, and lack of political will from the government towards resolution of dispute with the Madhes-centric parties have aroused serious dissatisfaction inside UCPN (Maoist), one of the ruling partners.
There is a discontent among the Maoist leaders regarding Oli’s working style as well as the performance of the Maoist ministers.
According to some Maoist leaders, the Oli-led government is taking one unpopular decision after another
when it should be addressing the plight of the people
affected by the April 25 earthquake and the unofficial Indian blockade. Prime Minister Oli, they said, has breached the spirit of the coalition culture while taking vital government decisions.
The relations between UCPN (Maoist) and CPN-UML have strained after Oli expanded the Cabinet by splitting some of the ministries.
UCPN (Maoist) Vice-chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha said his party cannot support Oli’s decision of splitting the ministries and increasing the numbers of ministers. “Supporting the government does not mean we have to support its every wrong decision,” he said.
The Maoist leaders have, however, said that the party was not immediately withdrawing its support from the government.
UCPN(Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has already conveyed the party’s dissatisfaciton to Prime Minister Oli.
The UCPN (Maoist) Standing Committee meeting on Thursday had also concluded that the Oli government and the Maoist ministers have failed to perform as per the aspiration of the people. Earlier, the party’s Central Committee meeting had also warned the Maoist ministers to either mend their ways or be ready to quit the government.
Among the Maoist ministers, Minister for Supply Ganesh Pun, Energy Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Home Minister Shakti
Basnet and Minister for Agriculture Haribol Gajurel are facing criticisms from the party for their poor performance.
Maoist leaders have said that the government has failed to ease the supply of fuel and other essentials from China and other countries after the Indian blockade.
Thriving black market and price hike of daily commodities are also the reasons why the Maoist leaders are increasingly growing impatient with the Oli-led government
and the Maoist ministers these days.
