Lama, Gautam to run for ANNFSU top post

The 22nd national convention of the union is set to kick off in the Capital on February 10.
The deck was cleared for Lama to contest from the camp close to party Chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli after another aspirant, incumbent Vice-chair Ain Mahar, from the same faction withdrew himself from the race. Gautam has the backing of the faction close to UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal.
Lama, who was elected vice-chair from the 20th convention four years ago, was an aspirant for the chairperson’s post in the 21st convention itself. She had withdrawn her candidacy in favour of Kishor Bikram Malla after leaders from the Oli camp assured her for the top post in the 22nd convention. Mahar was similarly convinced to withdraw his candidacy. He will now be contesting for the general secretary position.Both the aspirants have intensified their campaigns. Lama says her past experience of holding the key leadership positions is her asset. If elected, she will be the second female chair of the union, after Ram Kumari Jhankri.
“I got an encouraging response during my tour. I am confident of victory,” she said.Gautam also claims to be a strong contender in the race. Around 1,700 representatives from across the country will elect a new Central Working Committee for a two-year term. A 141-member central committee in addition to the 17-member Office Bearers will be elected from the national jamboree.
