Route inspected for chariot procession

The inspection team, led by the municipality officials and comprising representatives from district administration office, Nepal Police, Armed Police, Guthi Sansthan among others, observed the route along Bode, Nagadesh, Chapacho and Balkumari area. “The team will make a decision soon, after consulting with locals and cultural experts in the area,” said Keshav Silwal, information officer at the municipality.
The move by municipality authority follows mounting pressure from locals to arrange for an alternative route for the chariot procession in the wake of the Gorkha Earthquake and its aftershocks last year. Wooden beams erected to support tilted houses and other structures including temples are likely to obstruct the chariot procession. Madhipur Thimi lies in Baktapur—one of the 14 districts worst affected by the earthquakes.
Locals at Madhyapur Thimi annually celebrate Sindur Jatra (festival of orange vermillion powder) on Baishak 2 (April 15), welcoming the Nepali New Year and spring taking out 32 chariots of different gods and goddesses.
