The amendment also aims to make the party’s organisational structures more inclusive in line with the newly adopted constitution.
A PP meeting endorsed the proposal regarding the amendment which was endorsed earlier in the day by the Central Working Committee (CWC).
The proposal regarding statute amendment was presented by Chief Whip Chin Kaji Shrestha and was seconded by CWC member Kul Bahadur Gurung.
As per the amendment, the phrase “interim constitution” has been replaced by the “Constitution of Nepal” and the Constituent Assembly has been replaced by Parliament.
The new provision has ensured the representation of seven federal units instead of the five development regions in the working committee of the PP. The amendment has ensured representation 15 members from inclusive quota—both in election and nomination.
The post of PP leader in the NC is lying vacant after the death of former party president Sushil Koirala.
The statute was amended following pressure from senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel. Party President Deuba and Poudel are fighting for PP leader election.
Hints at tougher stance against govt
KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress on Monday expressed dissatisfaction over government’s performance in maintaining good governance and sluggish pace of post-earthquake reconstruction works.
The new leadership of the main opposition has indicated at taking a tough position against the CPN-UML-led coalition under Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
A meeting of Parliamentary Party demanded to ensure a smooth supply of daily essentials.
The meeting concluded that the government has failed to curb black marketeering, rocketing inflation and corruption. Though it has been two months since the removal of blockade, the government has failed to ease supply of petroleum products.
The party also charged the government with turning indifferent to reconstruction of quake-damaged structures and providing relief to the people who have lost their shelters in the disaster. The National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) has not taken any concrete measures to kick start the reconstruction, it said.
The NC has also urged the government not to issue ordinances to institute high courts as per the constitutional provisions, warning about its long-term impact.
Earlier, NC President had also raised concerns over the government’s performance in his separate meetings with PM Oli and UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal. With the party’s sister wings already taking to the streets, protesting the working style of the government, NC leaders say they will protest the government in Parliament.
