Road safety week kicks off

The Road Safety Week will be observed in 14 districts—Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kailali, Banke, Rupandehi, Kaski, Chitwan, Morang, Dhanusha, Jhapa, Saptari, Parsa and Makwanpur. According to a joint statement, awareness programmes will be organised in communities and schools to minimise the causes of road accidents and make people follow the traffic rules.
Statistics show that 13 million people are killed in road accidents across the globe every year. In Nepal, five people are killed on the road on an average each day while 33 get injured, according to police.
Students, locals, drivers of public vehicles and conductors will be given first-aid training and classes on road safety. Besides, school-level essay competitions will be organised, road safety messages will be disseminated through media and related educational materials will be distributed, the NRCS said.
