India has expressed its displeasure for “being dragged into Nepal’s internal affairs”, particularly issues related to efforts to topple the CPN-UML-led government.
During a meeting with the Nepali parliamentary delegation led by Development Committee Chairman Rabindra Adhikari in the Indian capital on Saturday, Indian Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj said Nepal’s “mature leaders” were capable of taking their own decisions.
“Prachanda and Sher Bahadur Deuba sit together and make a decision on the issues related to government formation but they [leaders] put the blame on us,” a member of the delegation quoted Swaraj as telling them. A five-member parliamentary delegation is on a weeklong official visit of India.
Since early May when the CPN (Maoist Centre) was reported of trying to lead a new government with the backing of the Nepali Congress, several UML leaders have publicly accused India of “trying to remove” the incumbent government. Lately, government change has been a central priority of the parties in Nepal.
During the meeting,
Swaraj also hinted that despite the commitments made by Prime Minister
KP Sharma Oli and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamal Thapa, the demands of Madhes-based parties have not been addressed so far.
“PM Oli made a commitment during his visit
to India and Minister Thapa also made his commitment two times,” Swaraj was
quoted as saying.
During his visit to India last month, Thapa told Swaraj that the problem in Nepal’s Tarai would be resolved once the Madhes-based parties joined dialogue.
