Floods inundate hundreds of houses in eastern districts

Eastern Regional Police Office in Biratnagar said normal life has been affected in Morang, Sunsari and Jhapa districts, where hundreds of houses have been inundated.
Hundreds of houses in Tintoliya, Pichara, Daraiyabasti and Mills Area of Biratnagar Sub-metropolis have been water-logged. Poor drainage system has exacerbated the flooding problem in the sub-metropolis.
In Sunsari, 150 houses have been inundated at Chhitaha and Chimadi. On Wednesday, the flooded Budhi stream had swept away two houses in Dhuhawibhaluwa Munici-pality.
Locals said at least 20 houses in the municipality are at high risk of flood.
Dipendra Pokharel, the chief of District Agricultural Development Office, said heavy rains for the past three days have destroyed vegetables planted on nearly 500 hectares of land.
In Jhapa, 82 families have been displaced because of floods since Wednesday. The district office of Nepal Red Cross Society said at least three houses were swept away by floods in Kankai, Mechi, Biring and Ratuwa rivers on Thursday.
Floods have also washed away a large area of paddy plantation in the district.
In Saptari, the rain-swollen Kahdo river spilled over its banks and inundated around 50 houses at Sarakpur village.
Police said the entire village has been waterlogged as there is no outlet for the floodwaters. Continuous flooding in the area for the past several days has also submerged the local Rajbiraj-Kunauli road, affecting mobility of humans as well as vehicles.
