The government has not released around Rs 22 million donation raised for the victims of 2014 landslide in Jure, Sindhupalchok.
While the donation collected at the Ministry of Home Affairs sits idle, the landslide victims are living in a miserable condition. Around 90 families, who were rendered homeless by the disaster, have been squatting on a public land at Lamosanghu, with little or no comforts of home.
Worst still, they have been told to evict the land by a construction firm that plans to set up its office there.
Sukamaya Gurung, one of the victims, says she and her family have nowhere else to go.
“We have been living here for two years, where would we go now ?” says Gurung.
The Gorkha Earthquake of 2015 has made the life of Jure landslide victims all the more difficult, with the authorities focused on the relief and rehabilitation of the people displaced by the earthquake. One of the worst affected districts, Sindhupalchok is still reeling with the impacts of the quake. The recent spate of floods and landslides have added to the misery and created more homeless families in the district.
Maili Tamang, who lost her two sons in Jure landslide, suffered another tragedy in the 2015 earthquake when her husband perished in the disaster. The last two years have been terribly unkind for the 80-year-old.
She says the coming days are not going to be easy for her, or other families who fled their homes in Jure.
“I have no hope of getting the donation that was raised for the Jure landslide victims,” says Tamang matter-of-factly.
What with the earthquake, floods and landslides in Sindhupalchok, she seems convinced that the government has long forgotten the victims of Jure landslide that had killed 145 people and displaced 94 families.
According to Chief District Officer Gokarnamani Duwadi, local authorities have been busy in rehabilitation and reconstruction works following the Gorkha Earthquake.
“We will distribute the fund to Jure victims after finalising the housing reconstruction aid list in the district,” he said when asked about the delay in distribution of the donation meant for the Jure landslide victims.
