The Supreme Court has issued a show cause notice to the government seeking reasons for withdrawing the ambassadorial nominees recommended by the erstwhile government.

A single bench of Chief Justice Sushila Karki on Wednesday also ordered the government not to implement the government decision, putting the issue on hold until another notice. The bench has summoned the petitioners and the defendants to be present in person in the court to discuss the issue.

The second Cabinet meeting of the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government had decided to cancel 14 political nominees for ambassadorial positions at a time when the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee was holding the hearings of the nominees.

However, nomination of eight career diplomats forwarded by the former government for foreign missions has been approved. On April, the KP Sharma Oli-led government had recommended 22 ambassadorial nominees including eight careers diplomats.

Four ambassadorial nominees—Yuvraj Karki (recommended for South Korea), Shiv Maya Tumbahamphe (Israel), Khadga Bahadur KC (Japan) and Narad

Bhardwaj (Sri Lanka) had moved the court against the decision, making the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Legislature-Parliament Secretariat and Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee as defendants.
