Issuing a press statement on Monday, the constitutional rights watchdog said the victims’ families have been going through psycho-social pressure due to the unknown status their loved ones.
“There is a situation of impunity in the country as the government has not initiated any legal action despite the NHRC identifying the culprits in involved in human rights violations and recommending action for the same,” reads the statement.
Two transitional justice mechanisms—Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEPD) and Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)—have been formed to look into conflict era cases.
According to the NHRC, the fate of 842 people disappeared during the conflict are still unknown. “It is disheartening that the situation of disappeared people is still not investigated and made public even 10 years after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement,” said NHRC.
