After a hiatus of 35 years, the classic tradition of Naradevi Shwetkali Mai dance is set to resume in Banepa this year.
The illustrious tradition was halted owing to economic insecurity and also to the State’s indifference. The dance was showcased in Kirtipur and Patan in the Valley last year and is soon slated to be organised in Bhaktapur.
“Political instability, economic crisis, and government’s indifference had caused the long-spanning culture to come to a halt,” informed Satya Narayan Dangol, chairperson of Shwetkali Conservation and management committee, based in Naradevi in the Capital. “We have now started collecting funds communally among us and hope to give continuity to the tradition,” Dangol said.
Legend has it that the tradition of Naradevi dance was first started by King Guna Kamdev during the time of establishment of the three cities in the Valley. However, there are some literatures that state the dance to have been started by King Amar Malla. The tradition is said to have been started in order to maintain peace, security, and to prevent the state from diseases.
The dance will commence in Banepa starting January 10. The show will feature a variety of performances such as Kumari dance, Karunamaya dance, Mahadya dance, Chandeshwori dance, Bhairav dance and Singhini dance, among others.
