Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has stressed the need of developing the Tribhuvan University into a centre of excellence for learning and research.
Addressing the 42 Senate meeting of the country’s oldest university at the central campus in Kirtipur on Wednesday, the prime minister said an institution like the TU should lead the way and set a benchmark for learning excellence by ensuring that the courses it teach are in tune with the modern times.
Prime Minister Dahal, who is also the chancellor of the university, urged the TU administration to take the initiatives to create an efficient and vibrant learning environment. He said granting autonomy to the TU was critical to make higher education accessible to all. Education Minister Dhaniram Poudel said the government was willing to offer the necessary assistance to reform and develop the TU into a world class institution for learning and research.
Vice-chancellor Dr Tirtha Raj Khaniya expressed concern over the government’s tendency of transferring the TU’s properties and component colleges to other universities without its consent.
The 55th annual report, amendments to the TU Act and Regulations and structural reforms are on the agenda of the TU Senate this time.
