A team of six fraudsters had, on Tuesday, taken Narayan Kharal and Bidhan Kharal under control, accusing their involvement in hundi (illegal transfer of money remitted by migrant workers) business, outside the New Road branch of the Global IME Bank. The duo had withdrawn Rs427,000 from the bank.
The suspects then took the Kharals to Dallu and Basundhara in a taxi and robbed them of the cash, cheques and mobile phones, police said.
The Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD) identified the arrestees as Biswas Gharti Magar, 27, of Manamaiju; Sudip Thapa Magar, 22, of Samakhusi; Ashok Baniya, 27, of Banasthali; Dhana Kumar Pariyar, 23, of Mitranagar; Shiva Bahadur Baniya, 24, and Narayan Baniya, 27, of Basundhara.
Police began investigation after the victims lodged their complaints, describing the appearances of the robbers. Senior Superintendent of Police Dinesh Amatya, chief of the MPCD, said Biswas and Narayan were the masterminds. They had been operating a hundi trade for a year, misusing the cash sent by workers from Korea.
“To trick police, they provided information frequently on criminal activities,” said SSP Amatya. “They might have believed that doing so would leave them free.”
Police had found that Narayan watched over people who withdrew money banks in the Capital.
Following the robbery, all of the arrestees had distributed the loot between them. Narayan and Biswas kept Rs80,000 each while Ashok, Sudip, Shiva and Dhana got Rs50,000 each. They then dispersed to various locations inside the Valley including Budhanilkantha and Bhainsepati.
It is learnt that many of the recent day raids on hundi trade were tipped by Biswas and Narayan. As they started contacting the police more frequently, they reportedly learned many codes and police slangs.
Shiva Bahadur and Ashok were found to be former soldiers inducted to the team to execute the plans made by Biswas and Narayan.
