Gautam’s Last rites held with state honours

The last rites of Govinda Gautam, who was killed after being shot by India’s Sashastra Seema Bal in Punarbas of Kanchanpur on March 9, were performed with state honours on the Doda riverbanks in Kanchanpur on Sunday.
Gautam’s funeral procession, attended by thousands of people, went through Seti Zonal Hospital, Dhangadhi bazaar, customs point, Doke bazaar and Punarbas.
They paid their last tributes to martyr Gautam and also chanted slogans against India, the Nepal government and the local administration.
Nepal Police accorded a ceremonial gun salute while Gautam’s 71-year-old father Khem Lal performed the final rites.
Gautam, 32, of Punarbas-8 in Kanchanpur, died on Thursday when the Indian border security force opened fire at protesters during a dispute over the construction of a culvert. The government decided to provide Rs1 million to Gautam’s family and fund the education of his children, besides declaring him a martyr.
