An estimated 250,000 people living in Kathmandu have left for their home districts in the past three days to cast their vote in the second round of local level elections in provinces 1, 5 and 7 on Wednesday, traffic police said.

According to the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD), 31,000 vehicles had left Kathmandu in the period carrying the people to their places of permanent residence.

On Saturday, 86,933 passengers left the Valley in a total of 10,500 vehicles. According to police, 87,399 passengers left Kathmandu in around 10,100 vehicles on Sunday.

Tok Raj Pandey, spokesperson for the Department of Transport Management, said the traffic obstruction along the Muglin-Narayangadh road due to the ongoing road widening works had reduced the passenger flow.

The number of people leaving on motorcycles and by flights is also increasing of late. Rupesh Joshi, senior executive at Buddha Air, said flights were being operated in full capacity to all destinations where polling is conducted on Wednesday.

Polling is being conducted in 334 local federal units in 35 districts on June 28. As many as 3,432,765 people in one metropolitan city, 7 sub-metropolises, 101 municipalities and 215 village councils have been listed to vote. In the second-round vote, 17,038 representatives will be elected to the local councils. Voter identity cards are being distributed from 8,364 polling centres until Tuesday.
