The Ministry of Education has agreed to offer golden handshakes to the temporary teachers even if they fail the test to be conducted by the Teacher Service Commission to decide who will get permanent positions.
To that end, the ministry is preparing to amend the Act, said Education Secretary Shant Bahadur Shrestha on Monday.
The eight amendments made to the Act in June last year had given the teachers two options—taking part in an internal competition or choosing a retirement package. However, the temporary teachers had been demanding state facilities even for those teachers who do not pass the test.
Teachers who are not selected for the permanent posting will be provided the golden handshakes under three categories based on their service period: 5-10 years, 10 to 15 years and above 15 years.
The ones in the first category will be entitled to an amount equal to 15 days’ salary for each service year, while those under the second and third categories will be paid one month’s salary and 45 days’ salary respectively for each year of their service.
All of them will also be provided with the medical allowances.
According to records at the Education Ministry, around 28,000 temporary teachers are serving in 16 different categories.
