Yeti Airlines, a Nepal-based private airline company, has imprinted the logo of United Nations-backed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on its ATR aircraft to generate awareness about the global goals which have to be met by 2030.

The aircraft containing the logo of SDGs were unveiled in Kathmandu on Monday. Yeti Airlines CEO Umesh Chandra Rai and Renaud Meyer, UN Development Programme country director, were present on the occasion.

“This is a powerful example to show the world that in partnership with the private sector, the sustainable development agenda can really take off. We are highly pleased to finally see these airplanes flying in Nepali skies spreading the messages of how we can tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges,” a press statement quoted Meyer as saying.

With its SDG-branded aircraft, shuttle buses, handy SDG leaflets, donate now link in Yeti Airlines official website, branding of the boarding pass and social media campaigns, the airline is expected to reach thousands of people with concrete and action-oriented messages on the global goals, adds the statement.

SDGs-a follow-up on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which expired at the end of 2015-are a set of 17 goals and 169 targets covering a broad range of sustainable development issues. These goals have to be achieved by 2030. One of the primary objectives of SDGs is to end poverty and hunger from the world. SDGs also aim to promote well-being of all the people, sustainable industrialisation, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, and employment and decent work for all.  Other goals include: reducing inequality; making cities inclusive, safe and resilient; ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns; and taking urgent actions to combat climate change and its impacts.

In short, SDGs aim to bridge inequality of all forms, raise access to basic public services, ensure access to justice and promote sustainable economic development.
