In the match between the already eliminated teams, Nepal salvaged an equaliser late in the second half to sign off their campaign with at least a point. Nepal could have even finished the tournament on a winning note had not Saraswati Hamal squandered a scoring opportunity from the penalty spot. Bhutan had taken lead in the ninth minute through Dekhi Lahajung.
The outcome on Thursday meant both Nepal and Bhutan finish the tournament with one point each. Both lost against the hosts Bangladesh and India in the four-team event but Bhutan ended in third by the virtue of better goal differences. Nepal lost to Bangladesh 6-0 before being hammered 1-0 by India. Bhutan had lost 3-0 against both the teams.
The other match of the day saw Bangladesh earn a comfortable 3-0 victory over India to finish the league on top with nine points. With the first defeat of their campaign, India finished second with six points. Already assured of the title showdown even before Thursday’s clash, the two teams will meet again in the final.
