In Birgunj of Parsa district, a group of people has been staging a relay hunger strike since Friday, demanding that the city should be named the capital of Province 2. The people in neighbouring Bara and Rautahat districts have also supported the protest.
Besides hunger strike, people of Birgunj are also enforcing a vehicular strike for 30 minutes daily to press their demand. They have threatened to intensify the protest if their demand is not addressed.
In Dhankuta, demonstrators have started to put up signboards in government offices, declaring Dhankuta Bazaar as the capital of Province 1.
Hundreds of people took to the streets and put up the signboards in 11 government offices on Sunday.
The protest, which has continued for weeks now, has affected the normal life in the neighbouring district of Sankhuwasabha as well. Transportation strike enforced by the Dhankuta locals has greatly inconvenienced the people of Sankhuwasabha.
With vehicles only allowed to move between 11pm and 5am, passengers are forced to wait for hours at Kewa Khola, which borders the districts of Dhankuta and Sankhuwasabha.
Protest in Dipayal, the district headquarters of Doti, entered its 13th day on Sunday. Political parties and locals in Dipayal want their hometown to be the capital of Province 1.
