Prez polls process starts on Monday

The Election Commission on Thursday established the office of the Election Officer in the premises of Federal Parliament building to conduct the polls to be held in two weeks.

The EC appointed Senior Judge in Patan High Court Til Prasad Shrestha as the election officer to oversee the entire election process.

An electoral college of members of Members of Federal Parliament and the members of Provincial Assemblies will elect the head of nation.

A total of 884 members [275 members House of Representatives, 59-members of the National Assembly and 550-members of the Provincial Assembly] will cast votes in the poll slated for March 13.

“The election office setup at International Convention Centre will carry out entire election process,” reads the statement issued by the Commission. All the eligible voters will have to come to Kathmandu for the voting.

Along with the establishment of the office, the EC also has made public the calendar of the election which will start with publication of the list of voters on Monday. 

Anyone willing to contest as the president will have to file the nomination on March 7 while the final list of the candidates will be made public next day. The voting will start from 10 in the morning to 3 pm. 

The Article 62 of the Constitution of Nepal makes it mandatory to have over fifty percent of votes can only be elected as the president. If no any candidate can secure the needed votes, another round of elections will be held where two candidates with the first and second highest votes will contest the polls.

As the Article 72 of the statute makes it mandatory to have president and vice 

president either from different communities or sex, the election of the VP will be 

held a week after the first election. The CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Centre) have agreed to share the positions one each.
