The Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Gokul Prasad Baskota, has pledged to enact a new communications law on the basis National Mass Communications Policy.

In his address at an event on “radio policy and partnership with local levels” organised on the occasion of the 17th establishment day of Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (ACORAB) Nepal here today, he expressed hope that the proposed new law would resolve problems existing in communications.

The minister highlighted radio’s role in spreading information and making various movements for change successful during crises in the country.

Community radio stations helped the process of making rural people well informed, he said. He promised to include the plan of community radio development in the government’s upcoming policies and programmes.

The government has a vision to propel the country on the path of economic, social and cultural development as per the constitution, he added.

Former minister Gangadhar Tuladhar and incumbent House of Representatives member Yagyaraj Sunar said it is better to regulate mass media instead of controlling them.
