Despite Janakpur Sub-metropolis’ repeated calls to the people in the road area to demolish their houses, they have not paid heed to the request. From Saturday morning, the sub-metropolis started using an excavator in the bazaar area to widen the road.
On Friday, the meeting of the sub-metropolis decided to widen the road and demolish the houses in the area. Janakchok and Bhanuchok are the main business areas of Janakpur. The project has proposed to widen the road to 16 metres and will require a metre on either side of the road to build footpaths. The sub-metropolis said demolition of illegally-built structures would continue as part of the road expansion drive.
The Rs989.8 billion project has been funded by the Asian Development Bank. A total of 10km stretch of the road is being widened where as sewage canal and drainage are being constructed along the 20km road.
