PCN asks EU to retract poll report
Mar 26, 2018-
Press Council Nepal (PCN) has expressed its objection to comments made by the European Union’s Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) in its final report on the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly Elections.
A meeting of the council held in the Capital on Saturday termed the EUEOM’s report objectionable, saying only the council was the legitimate body to monitor the media during elections. The PCN meeting also urged the European Union to take back its election observation report.
The EUEOM report states that the Press Council Nepal was seen weak and ineffective in carrying out its duty and responsibilities in the mass communications sector.
No other body except the council has the right to monitor the abidance of the code of conduct by the media during the elections, the PCN meeting said, terming the European Union’s action of monitoring Nepal’s media and issue a report “illegal and encroachment on its prerogative”.
“The EU has interfered in Nepal’s independence and sovereignty,” said PCN Acting Chairman Shambhu Shrestha.
The meeting urged the EU to refrain from interfering in the independence and dignity of Nepal and the Nepali people. It also objected to the EU’s act of disturbing the ethnic and communal sentiments and linking council’s officials to the political parties.
