Around 600,000 children work in 1,294 brick plants across the country

Apr 14, 2018-A campaign has started in Morang to create awareness against child labour in brick factories.

The drive follows a study carried out in 23 brick factories in 14 districts, carried out by Global Fairness Incentive Nepal and Greater Brick Nepal, where child labour were found to be rampant.

The two NGOs have stressed the need of making brick factories free of child labour, providing health security to workers, creating work-friendly environment, and managing accommodation for workers. Hom Nath Acharya, president of Global Fairness Incentive Nepal, said at a press meet that legal action should be taken against those brick factory owners who employ children in their businesses.

Dilli Ram Giri, president of Greater Brick Nepal, called for formulating laws to control child labour at brick factories. Around 600,000 children are working in 1,294 brick factories across the country, according to a study.

Brick worth more than Rs 500 million is produced every year, and there is a plan to increase the production to around Rs 5 billion by 2020.
