Economic agenda

Apr 15, 2018-

Foreign Affairs Minister Pradeep Gyawali is set to visit China on Monday to discuss the priorities of the Oli-led government while also discussing the Belt and Road Initiative projects with Chinese leadership (‘Foreign minister heads for China on Monday’, April 14, TKP Online). This is good news. Nepal needs to balance its relationship with our two neighbours who just happen to be the emerging giants in a new world order. This visit will open doors for the Nepali government to maintain deeper, official ties with China. With Modi and India on-board with a railway project up to Kathmandu, all this government has to do is convince China that though the Nepali market may be small in itself (making a rail connection not economically viable), we can act as an economic bridge between the North and the South. This would incentivise the building of the railway from both sides, while Nepal reaps trickle-down benefits.
