The District Attorney’s Office in Morang is set to file a case against 62 suspects in the 33 kg gold smuggling case and the subsequent murder of an alleged smuggler.
According to District Attorney Punya Prasad Pathak, his office will file the case at the District Court on Wednesday. Police have arrested 28 persons including a senior police officer and some traders. Thirty-four others are on the run.Pathak said the charges include murder, abduction, organised crime and tax evasion. The process for recording their statements and hearing for judicial custody would commence immediately after the case is registered.
The District Police Office completed its investigation into the killing of Sanam Shakya, who was allegedly involved in smuggling the gold and hiding it, and submitted its report to the district attorney office on Sunday.Shakya, according to police, was murdered in Urlabari on March 2. Police recovered his body from the boot of a vehicle (Ba 12 Cha 5963) during a security check in Biratnagar the following day.
Security personnel arrested driver Tekraj Thakuri, and passengers Narendra Karki and Mohan Kafle. Police said Shakya, the resident of Urlabari, was given electric current, the cause of his death. Shakya was the porter of the smuggled gold who later hid the precious metal.
Mahabir Golyan, Sambir Tolange, Madan Prasad Ghimire, Gopal K Shrestha, Doram Khatri, Balkrishna Shrestha, Birendraman Shrestha, Lakpa Sherpa, Kapil Raj Puri, Hemanta Gautam, Punya Lama, Lal Bahadur Magar, Raju Maharjan, Bhujung Gurung, Tularam Tharu, Amarman Dangol, Rajan Thapa and Lal Bahadur Magar were caught in connection with the crime.
