May 22, 2018-
Friends and relatives of Rinki Patel, who was found dead of an apparent suicide at her home on Sunday, staged a demonstration outside Parsa District Police Office in Birgunj on Monday, claiming that she was murdered over a dowry-related dispute by her husband and the in-laws.Traffic in the area was disrupted for nearly two hours because of the protest.
Rinki was found hanging from the ceiling of her in-laws house at Parsagadhi Municipality-4 on Sunday.
Police said her body had been sent to the Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital for post-mortem.
Rinki’s family do not believe that suicide was the cause of her death.
Her father, Prabhu, claimed that she was hanged to death by her husband and the in-laws for refusing to sell her land.
Prabhu had given 5-kattha land to his daughter as a wedding gift.
He said that Rinki’s husband and the in-laws had long been pressuring her into selling the land.
Police had briefly detained Rinki’s husband and father-in-law. They were released after questioning.
Prabhu accused police of taking bribe to cover up his daughter’s murder.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Man Bahadur Rai said they were waiting for the post-mortem report before proceeding with the investigation.
