Home minister seeks recommendations from NGO Federation
Jun 15, 2018-
Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa has sought recommendations in writing from officials of NGO Federation over the measures introduced by the government to monitor the activities of non-government organisations. A delegation of the federation had met Thapa on Thursday and put forward the demand that the newly-introduced measures should be scrapped. The Home Ministry had recently come up with a directive wherein non-profits are required to submit additional details than those demanded under the Association Registration Act-1977. As per the decision, office bearers and staff of such organisations have to submit property details while registering or renewing organisations. The organisations will have to submit reports to the authorities every four months.
“We will submit recommendations to the government at the earliest possible date,” said Gopal Lamsal, chairman of the federation. According to Lamsal, the federation members urged the minister to scrap the decision stating that it is against the country’s law and has come with ill intention curbing such organisations.
In response, the home minister assured the federation officials that the ministry would take appropriate steps to incorporate their recommendations. “He [Thapa] seemed to be positive while talking with us. But we doubt the government’s intention,” Lamsal said.
The federation conducted a meeting with representatives of more than 100 non-profit organisations after meeting the home minister that lasted for two hours. The meeting discussed about recommendations that have to be submitted within a couple of days.
