Local bodies in Salyan reel under shortage of staff

Sep 12, 2018-

The local units in Salyan are struggling to carry out their daily works due to staff shortage.

There are 10 local units in the distirct, all of them understaffed.

The elected representatives in the district say the local units need 200 staff to execute their daily duties smoothly.

Though the government has allotted 30 posts for each rural municipality and 50-70 posts for each municipality in Salyan, most of these posts are lying vacant.

“There are only a handful of staff to manage the office affairs and provide service to the public,” siad Dilaram Pun of Bangadh Kupinde Municipality-12. “Essential services have been hit because there aren’t enough workers to offer swift service.”

Kamaro Budhathoki of Chandekaranji said people from his village were still visiting the district headquarters for government services.

“Many essential services are simply unavailable at the local level because several key posts are vacant,” he said.

Sharada Municipality has 50 workers, though the government has approved 70 posts.

Mayor Suresh Adhikari said one secretary was looking after the affairs of two wards.

“We are severely understaffed on all departments. We have only one engineer working for the whole municipality,” he said.

At Bagchaur Municipality, 26 of the 66 positions are vacant, and that too after hiring contract workers.

“The municipality is barely functioning,” said Mayor Lokman Budhathoki.
