Morang District Traffic Police Office (DTO) has started taking examinations of vehicles drivers who were found driving under the influence of liquor.

The new rule has been imposed in the district after inspections found alcohol consumption was a main cause of the growing road accidents. Traffic police have started taking written exams of the drivers arrested for drink driving.

During inspections, traffic police found 88 drivers were found in inebriated state on Tuesday, while 76 people were caught drink-driving on Wednesday. “Among 88 drivers, only 15 passed the exams on Wednesday,” said SP Manoj Kumar KC, adding that the drivers who passed the exam were sent to the DTO after providing certificates for further legal action. Drivers who failed their exams will have to take another test.

On Thursday, 23 drivers failed their tests. Among 80 questions, the drivers have to answer 64 questions right in order to pass the exam. “We have also developed a technology that enables taking exams from home. Exams can also be taken through mobile phones,” said SP KC. The link to online examination can be accessed through Morang District Police Office’s website.

“Chalan number is required to open the software. A video recording will be activated automatically once the

examinee accesses the softwares,” said SP KC, explaining that the purpose is to prevent others from aiding the drink drivers in taking the exams.

One hundred and 71 road accidents were reported in Morang in the last three months. Of them, 80 percent of the accidents were cased by alcohol consumption, the DPO data showed.
