A 40-year-old man murdered his two sons, aged 5 and 3, before committing suicide at Jitpur Simara Sub-metropolis-4 in Bara on Sunday.

According to Area Police Office in Simara, Surendra Ram Chamar of Auraha strangled his sons Subin and Bipin to death and hanged himself from in his residence at Auraha.

Surendra, who worked as a mason, had separated from his wife Babita a few months ago. Babita has been staying with her parents in Nijgadh Municipality-4.

According to neighbours, Babita moved out of the house because Surendra often used to get drunk and beat her.

The couple’s children had been living with their grandmother Muniya Devi in a separate house nearby.

Police Inspector Subas Hamal said Surendra had been brought to the local police beat several times in the past for fighting with his neighbours and relatives.

“He had taken to drinking heavily after his wife left him. He was angry and stressed, which might have contributed to this crime,” the inspector said.

He added that Surendra had also stabbed his mother Muniya Devi a few years ago. He was charged with attempted murder and the Bara District Court had released him on bail.

A neighbour described Surendra as man who turned into “a demon” when he was drunk.

“His wife left him because he used to beat her all the time,” he said.
