Police on Monday detained the priest of Janakpur-based Ratna Sagar Temple in a land forgery case.
Superintendent of Police Govinda Thapaliya said the temple priest, Ashok Sharma, was being questioned in custody after he was accused of forging land ownership papers for 2.5 bighas of land owned by Janak Hajari Vidyapith of Nepal Sanskrit University.
Bijaya Chaudhary, the headmaster of Janak Hajari Vidyapith, had filed a police complaint against Sharma, accusing him of trying to sell the land to one Mahantha Baikuntha Das Baisnav of Ratna Sagar Math.
According to SP Thapaliya, the land in question was donated to Janak Hajari Vidyapith by the Central Guthi Sansthan 25 years ago.
Sharma had used forged documents to transfer the title to Baisnav’s name.
Janakpur High Court is due to hear the case on Tuesday.
