The agitating woman rights activists and locals have announced fresh protest

programmes to mount pressure on the authorities to arrest the culprits involved in the rape and murder of Nirmala Pant.

Holding a meeting under the banner of Citizen Struggle Committee in Mahendranagar on Friday, the agitating group declared its third phase of protest programme comprising interactions, sit-ins, rallies and even a banda.

The struggle committee announced that it would hold talks with political parties and local intellectuals on December 17 and interact with the representatives of the local units, provincial assembly and federal parliament on December 20.

The committee has planned various protest programmes in front of the Chief Minister’s Office on December 23 and stage sit-ins on December 26 and 27. Similarly, it will stage a mass protest rally in Mahendranagar on December 28 and enforce banda in Mahendranagar on December 29 and 30.

“The committee meeting also formed a team to manage the movement,” said woman rights activist Sharada Chand.

The committee wrapped up its second phase of protest on Wednesday by performing Homa--Hindu ritual where various offerings are made to fire in return for fulfilment of a wish--as a symbolic protest demanding swift justice for Nirmala.

Nirmala’s family has been staging a sit-in in front of the District Administration Office for the past month. Nirmala’s mother Durga Devi and other family members are continuing the indefinite protest, while her father Yagya Raj is receiving treatment in Kathmandu.

Thirteen-year-old Nirmala was found dead in a sugar cane filed in Bhimdatta Municipality on July 27, a day after she was reported missing. However, the authorities are still clueless about the culprits involved in the heinous crime.
