Durga Devi, the mother of murdered teenager Nirmala Pant, filed an application at Kanchanpur District Police Office on Wednesday, demanding authenticity verification of the DNA sample collected from her daughter.
After filing the application, she visited the Mahakali Zonal Hospital and gave her blood sample to cross-verify her DNA with Nirmala’s.
“The DNA samples of several suspects were tested during investigation, but none of them matched. We doubt the authenticity of the DNA sample that police had
collected from Nirmala,” said Durga Devi. “The verification process should bring the
truth out.”
The agitating women rights activists in Mahendranagar have long been demanding the authorities to cross-verify Nirmala’s DNA sample with that of her parents.
“It will be confirmed that at least the DNA sample was protected for investigation if it matches with my DNA. If not, the investigation carried out so far on the basis of Nirmala’s DNA sample will be proven false,” Durga Devi told the Post.
Thirteen-year-old Nirmala was murdered after rape on July 26. Police are still clueless about the culprits.
Superintendent of Police Kuber Kadayat said that Durga Devi’s blood sample was collected as per her request for DNA authenticity verification.
“The blood sample was collected as per the request of the victim’s family. The sample will be sent to Kathmandu for lab test on Thursday,” he said.
