Police form three teams to look into the death of 15-year-old boy in custody

Three separate teams have been carrying out investigation into the suspicious death of 15-year-old Kiran Karki Dholi in police custody in Birtamod, Jhapa.The Area Police Office in Birtamod, the Jhapa District Police Office and the Province 1 office of Nepal Police have formed their own teams to probe the case. Soon after the incident the Area Police Office in Birtamod constituted a team headed by Police Inspector Shree Prasad Rai to investigate into the case.
Another three-member team was formed later by the District Police Office under
the coordination of Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahendra Shrestha.
Following pressure from various quarters, Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police Kedar Rijal directed for an in-depth investigation into the case by a police team headed by Senior Superintendent of Police Kishwor Dahal.
Kiran of Mechinagar-6 in Jhapa district was found dead while in custody of the Area Police Office in Birtamod on April 14. Police claimed that Kiran, who was arrested on mobile theft charge, had committed suicide by hanging from toilet ceiling. Kiran’s family, however, claim that he was tortured to death.
The District Administration Office on Sunday held an interaction with rights activists and media persons about the incident. Chief District Officer Janak Raj Dahal proposed forming another probe team for fair investigation into the case. Another probe committee will be formed within two days to determine facts about the incident, said CDO Dahal.Speaking at the interaction, right activists raised questions on the way the police has been handling the case. Kiran’s body was removed and sent for post-mortem to Mechi Zonal Hospital in Bhadrapur without informing his parents. The rights activist and Kiran’s family have blamed the police for their shortcomings.
